Alteration planning
Plan the scope before the fitting
A useful alteration quote starts with the garment, its construction, the fit you want, and the work required to get there. This guide explains the factors Elegant Stitch reviews before providing a firm estimate.
What affects an alteration quote?
Garment type and construction
Dresses, pants, jeans, jackets, suits, bridal gowns, formalwear, uniforms, and specialty pieces are built differently. Seams, closures, structure, original finishing, and the areas that must be opened and rebuilt all shape the work.
Layers, lining, and internal structure
Lining, multiple skirt layers, boning, padding, interfacing, pleats, vents, and built-in support can add steps even when the visible adjustment looks small.
Beading, lace, pattern, and material
Beading, lace, sequins, embroidery, prints that must align, leather, delicate fabric, and specialty materials may require careful removal, matching, handwork, or rebuilding.
Fit goals and number of fitting stages
A straightforward hem is different from reshaping several areas of a garment. Bridal, formal, suit, and major restyling projects may need staged fittings so changes can be evaluated before final finishing.
Repair condition and prior work
Damage, missing material, worn seams, failed zippers, old alterations, or construction hidden inside the garment can affect the repair approach. Elegant Stitch needs to inspect these conditions before confirming the scope.
Timing and rush requests
Timing depends on the work, fitting needs, current workload, and event date. Rush service may involve an additional fee and is available only when capacity allows; it is not guaranteed.
Prepare for a clearer fitting
- Bring the actual garment and the shoes, undergarments, or layers that affect fit.
- Share the date you need it and allow time for any follow-up fitting.
- Explain how you want the garment to look, move, and feel.
- Point out damage, prior alterations, closures, or details that concern you.
- For complex work, contact the studio before visiting so consultation time can be planned.
Compare the same scope
When comparing estimates, confirm which seams, layers, details, fittings, finishing, repair materials, and timing are included. A lower total may describe a different scope rather than the same result.
